Pitru Bali Darpanam - Offering Ancestoral feast {முன்னோர்கள் வழிப்பாடு}

This is yet another method, typically used in south India

Things needed:

Black sesame seeds
Cooked Rice
Yogurt
Yellow Flowers

Start by praying to

Lord Ganesha
Ashwini Devatas
Maha Vishnu

And then Ancestors (Pitru) – 40 generations back, both maternal, paternal side and local souls.

May the kind Self may grant permission for us to submit the feast and for accepting that we may be blessed and make us happy. May we be blessed to submit the feast periodically. Meditate for a few seconds on

Lord Ganesha
Maha Vishnu

Take kindi and sprinkle water to wash hands and sprinkle on the body with the feeling of purifying the soul and body. Take Kusha grass ring (dried), purify by sprinkling water and wear it on the right hand’s ring finger. Take a small amount of Black Sesame seeds, flowers and Sandal-wood paste and meditating (few seconds) the Ancestors of forty generations submit in the water containing kindi.
Close both the openings of the kindi. Lift three times the kindi up and down in the air, Pour water from the Kindi on the ground with a concept to purify the Earth. Place a piece of Banana Leaf on the ground. Then place the Kusha grass on it. Now place one handful of cooked rice on the Kusha grass. Feel every time that we are offering this to the Ancestors.Pour some yogurt over the rice. Mix yogurt and rice. Take it in the right hand and keep it close to the heart and pray 40 generations of ancestors. Place it on the garbha grass. This is called as pindam.

Take a little sesame seeds in the hands and add water from kindi and raise the hands up and down three times and then allow it to be poured over the rice.Take a few flowers in the hands and add water from kindi and raise the hands up and down three times and then allow it to be poured over the rice(pindam). Take a little sandal wood paste in the hands and add water from kindi and raise the hands up and down three times and then allow it to be poured over the pindam.

Take the pindam along with the banana leaf, grabha grass in the left hand and the kindi in the right hand. Three times pour water in a circle on the gorund. Place the pindam (rice) in the center of the circle. Take the banana leaf and tear it into tow halves and place it on the two sides of the pindam and untie the grass ring and place it on the top of the pindam and pour water from kindi to wash the hands (outside the pindam).

Take some water in both hands and throw the water upwards to the above space, three times. On the third time, with water, clap the hands three times.

Go and take bath in shower along with the dress in the shower. Change new dress.

Read with Guru –navagraha mantra or Bhagavad or Vishnu Kavacha.

Eat cake made out of rice powder fermented with coconut water. Do this every month, the morning of Amavasi day (the previous morning of new moon day).

On the previous day of this event, it is good to avoid non-veg foods. Eat rice made foods only once a time. In the dinner, eat fruits and foods made of wheat.

[Dr.Shaik Muhammad Iqbal, The Development of Metaphysics in Persia, London.

அகத்தினிலே அவன்பாத மலரைப் பூண்டேன்;

'அன்றேயப் போதேவீ டதுவே வீடு"

பரமபத வாயிலெனும் பார்வை யாளன்;

மகத்தான ஞானமெல்லாம் வந்த தென்பான்;

ஆராய்ந்து நான்கண்டே னென்பார் கோடி;

Franz Anton Mesmer....{father of Hypnotism and Mesmerism}

Franz Anton Mesmer is however, a curious figure in the world of psychic practitioners.

In some ways the beliefs and practices of Mesmer look back to an earlier period of magical medicine as far back as two hundred years before his own time to the era of Paracelsus. Yet Mesmer, born in Switzerland on May 23, 1734, also directly precipitates the great surge in Spiritism that took place early in this same century of books on compact discs and Internet communications
His principal theory is remarkable in light of recent discoveries in the realm of latter 20th century physics. Mesmer believed that a kind of psychic ether pervades all space, and that the astral bodies far and near cause tides in this fluid, or ether.

Although today's scientists certainly would not jump to such conclusions, their recent identification of something they call "dark matter", theorized after repeated calculations on the universal mass and gravitational forces proved fantastically understated when compared to mathematical projections, tend to evoke a healthy air of credibility to the theories of some of the earlier shamans, including those of the remarkable Anton Mesmer.

He believed that this ether operating in individuals, when flowing naturally, results in a normal healthy condition throughout creation. Should the natural flow of this ether be impeded in any way, all sorts of sickness result. If a blockage has occurred in a patient, it must be dislodged. In this fashion Mesmer anticipated the Christian Scientist teachings of Mary Baker Eddy a century later.

A wealthy English dame passing through Vienna where a Jesuit professor had been studying the theories of Mesmer was put to a test when she complained of severe stomach cramps. Professor Hehl laid a powerful magnet on her belly, and to her astonishment, the cramps quickly dissipated. He then suggested to Mesmer that the magnetic force quite possibly was moving the etheric fluid. The medical profession was highly skeptical, but relying on his own instincts and those of his like-minded friends, Mesmer was soon making use of magnets to effect his cures.

After bleeding a patient, which was common practice for nearly every ailment back then, Mesmer noticed that as he approached the patient the flow of blood increased, and lessened noticeably when he stepped away. This was enough to convince the forty year old lay doctor that his own body must be some sort of magnetic force, hence the term, animal magnetism.

His practice boomed when word of this new miracle cure spread, although the combined faith of both healer and the patient in the process certainly was a persuasive factor in these cures, much like the placebo effect, well documented today. That the innate powers of a charismatic personality synchronizes the strong notions of a believer to effect untold numbers of miraculous payoffs cannot be denied.

Fame was heaped upon Mesmer after a hypochondriac baron in Rokow sought his help after being sarcastically referred to him by his own physician who finally tired of his complaints of back spasms, which the doctor felt were simply a product of the idle baronÕs imagination.

After five days of failure, on the sixth day of Mesmer's magnetic treatment the baron began to feel relief from this latest writhing bout with muscle spasms. News of the cure enflamed Vienna, and the medical establishment left no doubt of their displeasure in their colleague who had helped establish this vulgar charlatan.

As his recognition grew, so did the outrageousness of his methods. Mesmer devised a simple apparatus purported to distribute the magnetic forces to whole groups of willing patients. He constructed a whole system of healing tools designed to reach the most people in the least amount of time, beginning by immersing magnets in several jars of water connected with steel bands. He then collected the jars into a wooden tub resonating with iron filings and more water, and attached a hose and nozzle to this contraption to help spray the magnetized healing about the room or garden area busy with patients lounging and holding hands by the dozens. As expected, results were astounding.

Later a blind pianist, young and attractive, was to cross his path. Mesmer promised to cure her if she would take up residence in his house so that he could concentrate his efforts. Although there is evidence that the young artist's sight malady was caused by a detached retina, she soon believed that she could see ever so dimly. His women patients invariably were outfitted in a loose smock to insure a freer transference of his magnetic powers, and it is quite likely that his technique included the hands-on kneading of their breasts, thighs, buttocks, and wherever Mesmer deemed the flesh seemed knotted unnatural concentrations of etheric fluid.

Long before Freud, Mesmer seemed to realize the effects of sexual repression and nervous hysteria. His seductive techniques released many neurotic patients to the fresh feeling of an aspiring humanity, at least temporarily, free from the bondage of the host of mental and sexual insecurities modern society encourages.

Skeptics abounded nevertheless. While he managed to "cure" many resident patients, all pretty young ladies, his elderly wife remained ailing. The young pianist is said to have actually been helped by Mesmer's attentions, but she was whisked away against her will when the Imperial Morality Police intervened. He escaped to Paris.

There, his successes continued. His sensual healing techniques became the talk of society, women and men. King Louis XVI offered the practitioner a lifetime pension if he would sign a contract to remain in Paris and furnish proofs of his discoveries. Mesmer declined both conditions and in the spirit of bargaining-table bluff, he threatened to leave France if the pension was not provided without the conditions the king wanted to impose.

His animal magnetism cures were indubitably gathering a devoted and strong-willed following. Instructing pupils in his methods, he established centers in major cities across Europe, and when the king balked at Mesmer's monetary demands, he set a date for departure.

Paris was having no part in losing this wonderful healer. His wealthy followers started a slush fund, each contributing for the privilege of being a ground floor shareholder in a new enterprise based on the magnetic healing techniques of their beloved Franz Mesmer.

Mesmer left Paris, but was persuaded to return, exhaled after the fund collected by his followers surpassed the sum which the king had originally offered. Miffed that his own will had been circumvented, the king was eventually convinced by his Medical College to investigate scientifically the claims of the Mesmerists.

Investigating doctors were convinced that no evidence of a magnetic fluid existed, although they accepted the possibility that the charlatan seemed to possess great powers of suggestion.

Shortly after, a doctor faked an illness, faked his cure, and then published the dirt on Mesmer, as the wave of favorable public opinion was beginning to wane. Leaving Paris shortly after the Revolution, fearing his life, he was promptly exiled from Vienna. He resisted an offer by the king of Prussia to establish a Mesmer Institute in Berlin, his self-confidence evaporating, his age near sixty.

Mesmer's contribution to real science can be distilled in the fact that he understood that illness is not natural. Some kind of blockage of natural forces will inevitably yield stagnation and sickness. An instinctive desire to free the vital forces from restraint kept Mesmer successful as long as his own ability to acknowledge the forces he was using was strong, but the ruling establishment, then as now more often than not, always seems to overwhelm the harbinger of fresh insight concerning the body's spiritual essence, despite the best of intentions.

Mesmer died in 1815, comfortable and somewhat vindicated. The discovery of the hypnotic state was stumbled upon by accident by one of Mesmer's disciples, the Marquis de Puysgur, one day when trying to magnetize a young shepherd boy. Rubbing the boy's head had put the lad into a hypnotic, or spasmodic sleep (as he called it). Trying to arouse the lad to consciousness, the Marquis gave several commands, such as stand up, walk, and sit down, and was astounded to observe the boy obey, yet still remain in his sleeping state. When the shepherd boy finally woke up, he had no memory of these events.

And while the story of this strange 18th century man may delight, offend, or mesmerize the reader, Franz Anton must surely appear to us as no more a quack than some of the 20th century psychologists who must trace their intellectual roots to this man whose name is now a part of our language.

A Siddha who lived 600 years ago...Paracelsus

Paracelsus is the latinized pen-name of Philippus Areolus Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim.

Swiss physician and surgeon, philosopher and theologist, metallurgist and alchemist, magician and scientist, travelling medicine man and father of the science of pharmacology. He was a contemporary of Rabelais and Ulrich von Hutten, and Crowley considered him to be an Adeptus Exemptus.

The father of Paracelsus was a doctor, and the bastard son of a German nobleman: having intelligence and education but no endowment. Although he was brought up in poverty in the countryside of Switzerland, Paracelsus was exposed from an early age to the erudition, and to the library, of his father. Always empathetic to the suffering of others, he decided to pursue a career in medicine. He soon became extremely frustrated with the pomposity and insensitivity of the privileged caste of physicians, and with the academic medical community's dogmatic fixation on the theories of Galen and Avicenna. He resolved to revolutionize medicine himself through the diligent study of Nature, i.e., by experiment and observation. This study he referred to as "magic."

He abandoned his academic studies and began a series of very extensive travels, collecting medical anecdotes and folk remedies, treating the sick, and conducting medical and alchemical experiments. He travelled all over Europe, and visited the holy land and Egypt. He even travelled to central Asia: while staying with the Grand Duke of Russia, he was captured during an invasion by the tatars and taken to their capital.

He combined the information he compiled on his travels with the theological doctrines of Duns Scotus and Nicholas de Cusa, the magical teachings of Trithemius (see below), the Christian Qabalism of Giovanni Pico della Mirandola and Johann Reuchlin, and the theories of Alchemy to synthesize a completely new view of medicine. He rejected the Galenic theory of illness as a result of conflicts among the "four humors," and the ideas that health and disease are determined by astrology and the influence of saints and demons. Paracelsus placed no reliance on "supernatural" forces in his work. To Paracelsus, magic meant the use of natural forces which were not yet completely understood.

He developed the novel conceptions that the human body is an organic, self-constituted, sovereign whole, and that it is subject to the same natural forces to which animals and plants are subject. His idea of treatment was that the doctor assists the body to heal itself through its own natural healing processes, which ran against the conventional wisdom of the time which was that the doctor had to overcome Nature to achieve healing.

He founded the science of chemical pharmacology, divorced psychology from theology and demonology, and did pioneering work in the fields of occupational medicine, psychiatry and gynecology. He discovered zinc; the idea that herbal medicines contain active principles is his; and he coined the terms "chemistry" and "protoplasm." He also contributed the aspect of "salt" to the alchemical/philosophical theory of the three alchemical principles, salt, sulfur and mercury.

Having established his medical techniques and theories, he proceeded to promulgate them, severely attacking medical orthodoxy where ever he went. He obtained several decent positions during his lifetime, but due to his lack of formal academic credentials, his arrogance, his lack of patience, his coarse manners, his association with people of the lower classes, and his lack of social and political skills, he always ran afoul of the local elite and was soon forced to flee, despite his remarkable successes with his patients.

Later in life, after the collapse of the Reformation, Paracelsus underwent a conversion experience. He began to re-evaluate his natural philosophies in terms of religion, and rejected much of it as incompatible with his new religious feelings. He remained a Catholic, but rejected much established Catholic dogma, such as the ressurection of the flesh and the immortality of the soul. His religious philosophy was that of the simple life, with salvation secured not by works or by faith, but by love. Still later, he reconciled himself with science, and published his great synthetic treatise Philosophia Sagax. Even though he was able to reconcile himself with science, he was never able to bring together the two souls of God and Nature which dwelt within his breast.

The sword of Paracelsus was taken up in earnest after his death, and the established medical orthodoxy soon crumbled. His followers soon established their own orthodoxies in his name, some just as irrational and ineffective as those he had fought against.

The memory of Paracelsus is revered by chemists, physicians, philosophers and occultists of all stripes as a courageous pioneer and soldier in the army of Truth. Modern occultists who revere Paracelsus should always keep in mind that he was the sworn enemy of the superstitions of his day. It is the task of the true occultist to constantly challenge orthodoxies and superstitions, never to buttress or coddle them.

BIOLOGY OF RUDRAKCHA

Biomedical Properties of Rudraksha
The beneficial powers of Rudraksha are by virtue of its Electrical and Magnetic Properties.
Electrical Properties -The ability to send out subtle electrical impulses & Inductive vibrations and act as a Dielectric as in a capacitor to store electrical energy. Our Human body, The Central Nervous System, Autonomous, Sympathetic & Para sympathetic Nervous System and Various other Organ systems in toto can be considered a complex Bio Electronic circuit.Constant pumping of blood by the heart, blood circulation, the transmission of various impulses -Touch, Noise, Smell, Sight, Taste to the brain and the continuous movement of Neurons and Neurotransmitters in the brain and Nervous system generates electrical impulses. This is termed as Bioelectricity. This flow of Bioelectricity facilitates movement of information from the brain to various parts of the body and back. What we feel, think, hear, taste, see. Perceive all depends on the subtle flow of Bioelectric current. This flow of Bioelectric current is occurs due to the existence of potential differences or the different energy levels between different parts of the body.In modern age with intense competition the Stress levels have increased tremendously. Almost every individual has problems of Stress and Stress related ailments like insomnia, alcoholism, depression, Maladjustments, heart diseases, skin diseases etc. Any Doctor will confirm that almost 95% of the ailments are Psychosomatic or Stress related (i.e.) originating from Mind. When there is Stress or Maladjustment corresponding Stress signals are sent to the Central Nervous systems, there is an increased activity or abnormal of Neurons and Neuro transmitters.
Rudraksha beads' electrical property can be broadly categorized into:-
1) Resistance- There is continuous and subtle flow of bioelectrical signal throughout the body due to potential difference between parts of the Body. Rudraksha beads of particular Mukhis or Facets have a definitive Factor of Resistance. It is measured in Ohms. When these beads resist the flow of bioelectrical impulses a specific ampere of current flow is generated depending on the factor of resistance. This acts in tandem with heartbeat, streamlining it and sending out specific impulses to brain. These impulses stimulate certain positive brain chemicals. Making us feel better, more confidants, poised and more energetic.2) Capacitance or the Dielectric Properties -Rudraksha beads act as dielectric (i.e.) as a storage of electrical energy. This property of Rudraksha makes it capable in stabilizing and anchoring the Bioelectric current. The values are measured in units of Farad. This property is very helpful in controlling hyperactivity, palpitations of heart, streamlining heartbeat etc. Due to stress when there is increased physical activity heart beats faster and the overall activity of hormones and nervous system increases. This causes increased energy levels or increase in potential difference.3) Inductance -Rudraksha beads by it have permanent magnetic properties. They have been observed to send out Inductive vibrations with frequencies measured in units of Henry (Volt Seconds/Ampere). This perhaps is the reason why people have felt better even when Rudraksha beads does not touch them physically.Magnetic Properties -Rudraksha beads have Both Paramagnetic and Diamagnetic with the most important property of Dynamic Polarity We all are most probably aware of the beneficial healing properties of magnets. Magnetic Healing is becoming extremely popular off late and everyone who have been using magnets for healing have been getting the benefits and found overall betterment and rejuvenation. Rudraksha beads retain most of the properties of Magnets but it is unparallel in one aspect, that of the ability to change it's polarity or the Property of Dynamic Polarity. The basic way of healing is based the fact that the when the passage of arteries and veins which carry blood to and from Heart to all the parts of the body is blocked or reduced due to variety of reasons, various illnesses creep. Blood carries oxygen and energy to various parts of the body and cleanses it off waste materials. Any disruption of the smooth flow of Blood circulation is bound to cause illnesses.

Sidhars who are living in the body of the snakes....

Emotional Dynamism

Some disorders of the person have a physical cause alone, and some disorders are purely mental in origin. Where the physical and the mental meet is the realm of psycho- somatic disorder. In such a disorder, a physical illness has underlying psychological roots.

These roots consists of two factors : a particular negative belief about some aspect of life, together with an emotional mood that is generated as the response to that belief. The belief is not a conscious one, and I call it an unconscious idea, whilst the mood is the activity of one or more particular emotions that maintain the physical symptoms. This activity I call "emotional dynamism" (or sometimes I use the term "emotional dynamics" ). The intensity of the symptoms depends upon the intensity of the mood. [¹]

When the mood is active in the subconscious mind, then the physical illness is active as well. When a different mood is active, so the illness becomes temporarily quiescent.

If, through therapy or psychological support, the person is no longer troubled by the unconscious idea, then the emotional mood ceases to have any power and so the illness fades away. The person recovers his /her psychological health. The change in belief is the reason for a "remission" of symptoms, that is, when recovery occurs and cannot be explained by normal medical theories.

I use the term subconscious mind for what is personal to the individual,
and the term unconscious mind for what is general to humanity.

The unconscious idea is not unique to the person, so I assign it to the unconscious mind. The person's response is unique to him /her, and so the empowerment of emotional factors is a product of the subconscious mind.

I spent seven years engaged in an intensive psycho-analysis, followed by an equal number of years exploring the meaning of good and evil. During these years I experienced negative states of mind for extensive periods of time. I developed early symptoms of many illnesses and I could therefore analyse the emotional factors of them.

In addition to my own experiences, I spent many years as a porter in a local hospital. This gave me the opportunity to observe correlations between illness and the kind of personality that any patient had.

Another line of research was my reading of autobiographies. Autobiographies also produce material that can lead to the understanding of the subconscious emotional dynamism of illness.

My ability to identify states of physical pain was the legacy of the time when I intensively studied anatomy and physiology. This study was part of the requirement of a training course in Swedish massage and osteopathy that I undertook in my 30s.

I list and describe the illnesses that I experienced to some degree, together with some speculations on them and on one other illness (stroke). It shows what emotional motivation was dominant in my subconscious mind during periods of activity of the illnesses.

The first disorders that forced themselves onto my awareness were eye-aches and headaches. These are related to the problem of strokes (or cardio- vascular accidents). I begin with these.

1. Headaches and Strokes
There are two kinds of strokes since the brain is divided into two hemispheres, each with its own functions. A stroke on one side of the brain gives rise to qualitatively different effects than a stroke on the other side. The immediate cause of a stroke is excessive pressure within the brain.

Although I have not experienced a stroke, I have experienced the manner by which pressure within the brain causes headaches. There are two ways of generating pressure, and so there are two common kinds of headaches : one kind for each hemisphere. In addition, a third kind of headache can occur around the base of the skull, where it joins the neck vertebrae.

The immediate cause of headaches is pressure, but the precipitating cause is an emotional mood. The mood gives rise to the pressure, which then causes the headache. I present my discoveries on moods which act as headache triggers. These moods are fear, anger, resentment, and bitterness.

Fear

One day I observed the way that fear affects the brain. I called it the ascent of fear. First the fear was felt as a heaviness in my belly (solar plexus region) ; later it rose to my eyes, making them ache. Then I felt it rise to the right-hand side of the brain. I became aware of a sudden pressure, as the fear contracted the brain tissue : it seemed as though the tissue was being squeezed. I developed a headache soon afterwards. I have felt the contraction of brain tissue due to fear a few other times since.

If the contraction is maintained for some time then the capillary blood supply in the affected region will be squeezed and perhaps cease ; in this situation the death of some brain tissue is likely to occur due to lack of oxygen and blood. A stroke may result. I find that aspirin is effective against this type of headache.

Anger and Resentment

In contrast, anger and resentment cause headache by raising the blood pressure. The headache is felt on the left-hand side of the brain, or occasionally in the middle of the forehead. However, if the resentment or the anger is extremely intense then a band of pressure may be felt around the whole head.

Increased blood pressure may cause leakage of blood from the capillaries that are supplying the brain tissues ; the increase in fluid in the brain can add additional pressure on the tissues in the affected region. Too much pressure can damage tissue and a stroke may result. I find that aspirin is usually ineffective against this type of headache, and so I prefer to use paracetamol.

In my view, the reason for there being two main types of headache is because anger is binary, or complementary, to fear. [³]. Each emotion produces a different response in the head.

To summarise so far :
there are two main types of headache and two types of stroke.

Fear causes headache and right-brain strokes by contracting the tissue of the right brain. So presumably the physical cause of the stroke is infarction of brain tissue due to contraction of the capillaries.

Anger and resentment cause headache and left-brain strokes by increasing the blood pressure within the left brain. So presumably the physical cause of the stroke is capillary leakage which then compresses adjoining tissue. Anger is short-term, whereas resentment can last for days or weeks at a time.

Bitterness

There is a third kind of headache that occurs around the base of the brain. I notice it mainly along the left-hand side of the occipital bone (that is, to the left of the junction with the neck vertebrae). The pain often develops when I am laying down trying to sleep, or when I am reclining with my head on pillows. The kind of pressure exerted is increased blood pressure, since my nose is inclined to bleed during these headaches.

The headache pain needs to be separated from musculo-tendon pain that can occur in the same region. The base of the occipital bone, running from ear to ear, is the site of attachment for tendons that join to various back muscles. These tendons can cause pain and stiffness at the points of attachment to the skull. This pain can be relieved by exerting strong thumb pressure on the painful sites for a couple of minutes : the pain will fade as the thumb pressure induces relaxation in the tendon and muscle. The reason for this effect is that the muscle is initially over-stimulated by the thumb pressure ; but this over-stimulation cannot be maintained for longer than a minute or two, and so the muscle has to relax. As the muscle relaxes, the pain fades.

However, the headache pain is not reduced by applying thumb pressure to the site of pain. The emotion that creates this headache is intense bitterness. This is not a short-term effect. I experienced intense bitterness for many years before this kind of headache began to appear.

2. Eye-aches
As with headaches, so with eye-aches. There are two common types. Anger and resentment raise blood pressure in the eye muscles, so making them ache. Fear contracts the eye muscles (and produces coloured lights when gentle pressure is applied to the closed eye-lid – this effect is not produced by resentment). I presume that the muscles concerned are the extrinsic ones which control the shape of the eye-ball, and not the intrinsic ones which control the shape of the lens.

Hence changing one’s spectacles may have no effect on eye-ache, since the spectacles only compensate for lens defects. Whereas doing eye exercises (such as rolling the eyes) will reduce eye-ache, since the eye muscles are given a work-out.

3. Rheumatoid Arthritis
When my mother died I went through long periods of intense guilt and jealousy. During the times when jealousy (mode of self-pity) was dominant, I began to experience rheumatoid arthritis. In each different period of jealousy the arthritis was generated in a different place, though usually on my hands and wrists and sometimes in my feet. When the long spells of jealousy faded away, so did most of the arthritis.

However, some arthritis was left as a permanent residue. Years later, I still feel twinges of pain, mainly in my right thumb. I have been left with weakness in my hands and wrists, and sometimes my feet hurt when I walk.

4. Skin Cancer
During a period of prolonged guilt (mode of self-hate) after my mother died a small ulcer appeared on my nose. It developed quickly, but then equally quickly disappeared when my mood changed. Subsequently it re-appeared and disappeared a few times, always on my nose and always occurring during the periods of guilt and then fading when the guilt passed away. The size of the ulcers varied, up to about a quarter of an inch square on the largest one.

My nose has been red for all my adult life, due to capillary damage from intense sunburn when I was in early adolescence. Hence it is a site of physiological weakness. I interpreted these ulcerous attacks to be a form of incipient skin cancer (in a malevolent form), since they fitted the description of such symptoms.

5. Angina and Rapid Ageing
In the spring of 1993 my left upper arm (deltoid muscle area) became susceptible to cold for some days, whilst my right upper arm was adequately warm. My dominant mood then was resentment.

When bitterness was intense I noticed that when walking into town the first half-hour was a time of difficulty – my heart did not seem to be responding to the need for extra effort. When I was in a good mood the walk caused no problems. A month later I could detect occasional spasms in the blood vessels in my left deltoid area. Then after a week, during a short spell of intense bitterness, my left deltoid muscle went into pronounced, regular spasms as I lay in bed. The upper left shoulder is a preferred area for referred pain from the heart. Obviously I was developing heart problems, presumably angina, during the periods of bitterness.

The effects of resentment and bitterness are different. Resentment has no noticeable effects on the heart (apart from raising blood pressure) ; but it produces a coldness in the left shoulder/deltoid area. This effect is most easily detected in cool surroundings, such as when I am in bed. This symptom verifies a social metaphor : when I resent someone I show him the cold shoulder (so long as it is the left one ! ). Intense bitterness produces angina.

Bitterness also causes another dramatic effect – prolonged periods of it institute rapid ageing ! My beard turned from black to a mixture of white and gray during the years of my psycho-analysis and the following few years. The most noticed example of rapid ageing in a public figure was that of Hitler, when Germany began losing the war in Russia. [4]

6. Heart Deterioration
When pride (mode of hatred) is dominant and I drink strong tea, I usually detect mild aches from the heart region. This effect is absent when I am in social company, since the anxiety burns up the caffeine. In my view, heart deterioration is caused by pride in this mode, aided by caffeine.

There is another common effect produced by pride. All three forms of hatred (those produced by guilt and pride, as well as hate on its own) restrict the blood circulation to the body’s extremities. The pride and the guilt have the greatest effect, and help cause cold hands and feet, as well as the dry skin feeling in the hands. However, the most noticeable effect of pride occurs on the head – the reduced circulation to the scalp over a long period of time causes baldness.

7. Multiple Schlerosis
One day in my 30s, years before I began my self-analysis, I was walking to work one morning. Suddenly my left leg seized up and refused to move. I was rendered motionless. I had to use enormous will power to get it moving again ; even then it was some moments before I could stop dragging my leg and walk normally. The temporary paralysis was probably due to fear. At that time I did a lot of walking, so my legs were in excellent condition.

I had much trouble with dreams in 1991 and the early part of 1992. These dreams caused a great deal of sweating in my thighs. The dreams were frequent enough for me to lose weight off my thighs. And in my dreams I had difficulty in walking (dreams can be indicators of incipient or potential illness).

One day in 1993, I shared afternoon tea with a new female acquaintance. My sexual anxiety was high. My left leg, particularly the thigh, was persistently shaking with fear. Trouble with my left leg was not new. I stored enough tension in my left leg and buttock to cause constant irritation when I slept on my left side. The tension, rather like a dull ache or even a dead feeling, seemed to originate from the piriformis muscle area, which presumably then irritated the sciatic nerve. By 1995 the outside area of my left ankle and heel had become sensitive to pressure when I was laying in bed.

What illness symptoms were these? There seemed to be just two possibilities, either multiple schlerosis or Parkinson’s disease. I favoured the former diagnosis. During the time when I worked in the local hospital I occasionally observed patients with multiple schlerosis. My observations seemed to indicate a factor of self-pity – the patients were nice people, but inclined to be passive. Fear comes into both multiple schlerosis and Parkinson’s disease. Fear produces either a feeling of muscle "deadness" and "inertia", or else muscle shaking and tremor.

The novelist Arthur Koestler developed Parkinson’s disease in his old age. In his autobiography ("Arrow in the Blue", chapter XII) he related his problems with anger. When he read about atrocities committed on Jews he felt himself choke and seethe with impotent anger. He wrote that he suffered from "Chronic Indignation" in the same way that other people suffer from chronic indigestion. He compared the sensation of choking with indignation with the periods of relaxed quietude that he often experienced – they were opposite states of mind for him.

Now Parkinson’s disease may well be a symbolic representation of this attitude to anger, in the way that the limb muscles operate on a start-stop-start basis ; that is, the illness may represent the choking back of nervous energy. I do not handle anger in this manner. Hence I interpret my leg problems to indicate signs of latent multiple schlerosis.

Purpose to Illness
When a person has a major illness that is still progressing then any psychological counselling should have at least some component that aims to ameliorate the intensity of the emotion that is feeding the crisis. What happens if this intensity is decreased, or even fades away altogether ? In my view, a spontaneous remission of the symptoms of an illness reflects the cessation of the subconscious emotional dynamism.

When attempting to analyse the emotional dynamism of an illness, it is necessary to separate people who are engulfed by the illness from people who are recovering from it. Recovery denotes a change in subconscious motivation. (Subconscious motivation usually means the influence of the current subconscious mood and its associated ideas).

On the path of personal evolution, does psycho-somatic illness serve any purpose ? My answer is Yes. The body is the vehicle for the mind. The body that a person gets is that necessary to express his ideas, meanings and values within a physical existence. Without a body the person (as a pure consciousness) will usually remain in ignorance of his virtues and vices, particularly the vices !

It is one of the purposes of the body to reveal to oneself the way that one is handling dominant emotions, attitudes and desires. Ultimately, one’s repertoire of such states of consciousness indicates how one is handling power.

Usually the person does not like to be aware of negative states of consciousness, so he relegates them to the subconscious domain of his mind. But difficulties do not vanish just because the person prefers to ignore them. The negative states are brought back into awareness by a roundabout route. This is done by the manifestation of symptoms. The despised emotions, attitudes and desires help to create symptoms of physical illness, as well as accentuating any mental confusion. By facing up to these problems the person is thereby indirectly facing up to his psychological immaturities.

Causation
My understanding of psycho-somatic illness brings in the issue of ethics. Who is responsible for the production of such illness ? Is it the person who is ill ? I do not accept this. Then what or who is responsible for illness ?

There are two aspects to my answer.

First
My view is that it is the immanent life force (or the immanent god) which creates the illness, using the unconscious mind for this purpose. However, the particular psycho-somatic illness that the person experiences is not an arbitrary choice. The type of illness that is created is determined by the psychological characteristics of the person. The illness is created in order to bring the person’s subconscious emotions and attitudes and desires into normal consciousness where they can be faced and dealt with.

Secondly
The person's soul also has a hand in psycho-somatic illness ; my view is that the soul controls the intensity of the illness. In any emotional experience, whether pleasurable or unpleasurable, the intensity can be controlled by the soul. The soul can neutralise, minimise or maximise the joy or sorrow being felt. A deduction from this view is :

when a person experiences a remission of symptoms,
this is due to the action of the soul.
